How to Choose the Best Office Lighting

How to Choose the Best Office Lighting

Almost all of us work in small or large organizations. Working 40 hours a week or more. Realizing that you spent a huge chunk of your time inside your office and working overtime takes it out of us all. After working in some bleak and some refreshing offices, I began to realize that your office environment can affect the way you work. When I worked in well-lit more spacious areas the suggestion of spending some extra time in the office didn’t seem to gloomy.

Amazon, a company well known for their overtime and long working hours have invested a lot of money into their new offices. Their headquarters and “The Spheres” have taken the approach of foliage along with space in order to promote creativity and better moods for their workers. The office environment is pleasant now, rumor has it that people are voluntarily doing overtime just to be there!

Is everybody lacking motivation to stay in the office because of laziness? Or is it because the office isn’t comfortable enough! In today's environment where employees work long hours, we must also consider the comfort of the office environment! Especially the key ingredient to the office atmosphere: the lighting. For the safety and vision of employees, we need to create an office lighting environment that employees don't want to go.My current office although is not completely bleak is not inspiring either. The lighting is practical and the space is acceptable. However, it’s not somewhere you’d plan to spend your weekend. With a huge influx of projects and new customers we’ve all been asked to stay a little later and do a few extra few days here and there.

Common Office Lighting

In the case of artificial lighting, there are four common types of office lighting: general lighting, local lighting, integrated lighting, and special lighting.

General Lighting

General lighting, is a lighting method that takes care of the entire room without taking into account specific location’s needs. This can be done in general meeting rooms, reception rooms and offices without special lighting requirements.

Partial Illumination

Partial illumination refers to the illumination used to increase the brightness of a given location. Local lighting is often necessary in offices that require sophisticated operations such as writing and calculations.

Integrated Lighting

Integrated lighting refers to the illumination method whereby work surfaces are composed of general illumination and local illumination. It is often used when the illumination requirements are different or the distribution of office seating requiring the same illumination are not in the same place.

Special Lighting

Special lighting such as color lighting, invisible lighting, etc. Usually only used in office spaces with special lighting requirements.

Different Space Lighting

Within the diversification of the market economy and the various company's operational structures, there is a wide amount of variation within companies, the degree of independence of the departments, and the degree of employee independence. Therefore, companies now need to pay attention to the different areas within the offices and their needs, to create a more comfortable atmosphere for their employees.

Front Desk

As the first impression of the enterprise, the front desk not only displays the strength of the enterprise, but also highlights the cultural connotation of the organization itself. It is necessary to formulate corresponding lighting methods based on the overall positioning and decoration to reflect the character of the company.

The overall brightness of the lighting should be high. Downlights can be used for the basic lighting. At the same time a track light can be used to focus on the background image on the wall to achieve the effect of highlighting the corporate image and displaying the strength of the enterprise.

Open Office Area

The open office area is the largest area of office space. Including all of the functional departments of the company; including computer operations, writing, telephone communication, thinking, work exchange, meetings and other office activities.

In lighting, the above office behavior should be combined with the principle of uniformity and comfort. Usually, the uniform spacing of the lighting method is adopted, and the corresponding lighting is used in combination with the ground function area. The work area uses a grille light panel to even out the workspace and reduces glare. Energy-saving down lighting is used in the collective office access area to supplement the channel with light.

Meeting Room

The conference room is the place for the company's major decision-making. Including conferences, training, negotiations, video observation, and meeting guests. The lighting should be versatile. It should either have intelligent controls or be dimmable so the lighting can switch or be able to provide different modes for different scenarios.

Conveying the facial expressions of participants is one of the most important tasks of conference room lighting. The lighting should avoid inappropriate shadows and contrasts. The wall façade can be wall-washed with spotlights to provide a fun ambient effect to help a monotonous long-term meeting environment. In combination with the ceiling decoration structure, a suspension lamp or a concealed lamp can be used to form the lamp band.

SANSI LED Downlights for My Office

Downlights want to produce smooth transitions. Downlights are generally used in large public spaces to illuminate space, but can be used in open office space and corridors.

When lighting a home office or a large office space it is important to layer it with the most suitable types of lighting. However, for my corridors and my open office spaces, I decided to combine downlights with table lamps.

The LED Downlights I Chose

I looked around for a while and wanted to find a downlight that could provide a soft light with a high CRI while being bright enough to light up the whole office. This is when I found the SANSI 15W LED downlight. When I unpackaged them I thought they looked and felt great. They were super lightweight. Their light weight and small can made them really easy to install and doing 100 of them wasn’t a big deal!

The lights had a great look and design and their ceramic body really helps their heat dissipation. Even with 100 on in my office at the moment I don’t feel any extra heat. They’re working great! They provide a great soft beam to my office of around 1100lm. Due to the fact the beam is emitted at 4000K but the LED chips are covered by a frosted glass finish, the beam is still gentle and soft on everyone’s eyes.

Overall, I would suggest for companies to promote a happier healthier office for all offices, whether they are doing overtime or not. The most important way to protect your eyes is to stay away from high-intensity beams of any color temperature!
