Security Light’s IP Ratings Explained
IP Ratings are something we all see when looking at LED lights. Especially for outdoor lighting IP ratings are incredibly important. So to get a better understanding of IP Ratings and to see exactly what they mean will help everyone make better-informed purchases.
What Is An IP Rating?
An IP Rating or Ingress Protection Rating is an international standard to define levels of sealing on electrical products. The higher the rating the more protected the product will be against dust and moisture.
IPXX first digit
The first digit in an IPXX rating shows the product’s protection and sealing against dust or solids. The scale goes from 0-6, 6 being the highest and 0 being the lowest level of protection.
IPXX Second Digit
The second digit in an IPXX Rating shows the product’s protection against moisture, i.e waterproof. This is also rated from 0-6, 6 being the highest level of protection and 0 being the lowest.

IP65 &IP66
As a common rule, most outdoor security lights and floodlights will have ratings of about IP65-IP66. These are the two measurements you should be looking for as they’re about the ratings you need for an exterior light to be long-lasting and durable.
